How Much Do Lift Kit Regulations Vary by State?

Nothing beats cruising down the highway in a lifted truck—but not if you’re scared about the cops stopping you. Every state has unique legislation for lifted vehicles. Even if you plan to spend most of your time off-road, you must follow your state’s lifted truck rules and regulations. Here are just a few of the most notable state restrictions on lift kits.

Florida

The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) determines the maximum bumper height; different states have different rules for this. In Florida, for instance, vehicles with a GVWR of fewer than 2,000 pounds must have a front bumper height of 24 inches and a rear bumper height of 26 inches. Vehicles with a GVWR of 2,000 to 2,999 pounds must have a front bumper height of 27 inches and a rear bumper height of 29 inches. Vehicles with a GVWR of 3,000 to 3,999 pounds should have a front bumper height of 28 inches and a rear bumper height of 30 inches. Vehicles having a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 5,000 pounds are excluded in this state.

California

California has far stricter rules regarding lift kits. You can add only 5 inches to your vehicle’s frame height and body lift. Using aftermarket components is permitted, but only in select cases, such as with new emissions systems.

Georgia

In Georgia, suspension lifts are limited to 2 inches, making Georgia less off-road-friendly than one might expect. However, one can still install aftermarket parts.

Washington

Washington State limits front and rear bumper heights on cars and SUVs to 22 inches. Vehicles with a GVWR of fewer than 4,501 pounds should have a front bumper height of 24 inches and a rear bumper height of 26 inches. Vehicles with a GVWR of 4,501 to 7,500 pounds must have a front bumper height of 27 inches and a rear bumper height of 29 inches. And vehicles with a GVWR of 7,501 pounds or more should have a front bumper height of 28 inches and a rear bumper height of 30 inches.

Arizona

In Arizona, lift kits for trucks and Jeeps are permitted as long as mud flaps and fenders are used. There are no limits on frame height or suspension.

Texas and North Carolina

Lastly, the states of Texas and North Carolina have no laws regarding the use of lift kits or the installation of other suspension systems!
