With all the hype surrounding the upcoming 2018 Jeep Wrangler, it’s easy to overlook the older models. Not to worry, we at Supreme Suspensions are long-time Jeep fans and offer products for Wranglers of all ages. Here are some of our favorites for the Classic Wrangler:
Classic Wrangler JK (2007-2017)
The most recent incarnation of the Wrangler, as well as the first ever 4-door model, was larger and more luxurious than any Wrangler before. Despite the upgrades in comfort, you can still get the most out of its rugged roots with these goodies:
Lift kits are what we’re about and we’ve got one for the JK. Ours includes four CNC machined steel lift spacers (in sizes from 2”-3”), shock extenders, brake line relocator brackets, and an assortment of installation hardware. Everything you need to get started!
It’s no secret that big tires put big strain onto your steering components. Our heavy duty tie rods replace the factory components with upgraded ball joint ends and powder coated tubing to keep your undercarriage looking great for years to come. Don’t go bolting up those Super Swampers without beefing up your front end!
LED light bars are all the rage these days and we’ve got a mounting solution for the JK. Our brackets are designed to bolt up to the A-pillars of your Wrangler and support either a 50” or 52” light bar above the windshield. There are even mounts to attach additional spot lighting at the bases of the brackets. Don’t have a light bar yet? Our friends over at Spyder Auto have you covered.
Classic Wrangler TJ (1997-2006)
The second generation Wrangler was a little more rough-and-tumble than the JK but it still brought such innovations as a coil-sprung suspension and remote-locking differentials. If you haven’t noticed, the TJ Wranglers have developed a bit of a cult following and their resale values reflect accordingly. The TJ could potentially become the ultimate Classic Wrangler so grab one up while you still can. Check out some of the things that we carry for the TJ’s:
A great first step to any Jeep build is adding some inches and our Wrangler TJ lift kit is specifically engineered to work with the TJ’s unique coil spring suspensions. Light yet rock solid, this kit is consistently one of the top sellers from our catalogue. Available in sizes from 1.5”-3”, this kit is a great addition to any Classic Wrangler TJ project.
Adjustable Control Arms and Track Bars
Once your TJ is lifted, you can’t ignore that alignment. Our Jeep Wrangler TJ adjustable control arms are designed to get your caster angles back into check while our adjustable track bars will bring your axles back to center where they belong. Constructed from tubular steel and powder coated for maximum protection from the elements, our control arms and track bars are designed to handle whatever you can throw at them.
While we’re on the topic of suspension alignment, it’s probably wise to mention drivetrain alignment. When lifting a vehicle, especially with a short wheelbase like a Classic Wrangler, the pinion angle gets increased. This, by the way, is the angle at which the drive shaft meets the differential. When there’s too much pinion angle, you risk pesky vibrations and premature U-Joint failure. By lowering the transfer care, even just a little bit, your pinion angle gets corrected for miles worry-free driving.
To combat the TJ’s higher dash line, these seat risers provide extra visibility for a more commanding driving position. These spacers also provide some extra space for under-seat storage. Available in both 1” and 1.5” heights, these spacers are precision machined from aircraft-grade aluminum and include all necessary installation hardware.
Classic Wrangler YJ (1987-1995)
The original Wrangler, the YJ, replaced the long-running CJ series, which had been around, in various iterations, since the end of the second war. Though considerably more refined than its CJ predecessors, the YJ still maintained a rough-and-tumble presence with limited creature comforts and traditional elliptical leaf springs at all four corners. Here are some items that you can use to spruce up that Classic Wrangler YJ:
From the factory, YJ Wranglers were delivered with the axles mounted over the leaf springs, as opposed to under the springs like you find on most modern trucks. It works, nonetheless, and leaves an opportunity to pick up some serious lift for not a lot of money. By installing our Spring Over Axle brackets, you will be able to mount the axles under the springs and gain a full 5.5” of lift. Be aware that the installation requires some light welding and with that much lift, you’re also going to want to explore longer shocks, a drop pitman arm, and upgraded driveshafts.
A less extreme alternative to the Spring Over Conversion is our Jeep Wrangler YJ lift shackles. A snap to install and designed to replace the factory spring shackles, this is arguably the easiest way to get an extra 1.5” out of your YJ Wrangler’s suspension. While that might not seem like much, this is just enough to fit a set of larger tires under there without having to go crazy with other modifications.
Much like the TJ, drivetrain alignment becomes an issue when lifting a YJ. Very similar to the TJ kit, this Wrangler YJ transfer case drop kit lowers the transmission crossmember to correct those pinion angles on lifted Jeeps. Relatively inexpensive and easy to install, your U-joints will thank you for this mod.
For three decades, the Jeep Wrangler has carried the torch as the benchmark in American off-roading that dates back to the military Jeeps of WWII.
